Kai graduated from Lafayette College with a BS (honors) in Mechanical Engineering in 2015. He completed a thesis on high speed combustion and flow visualization in an expansion tube. Later, Kai attended Imperial College London, earning a MSc in Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and Fluid-Structure Interaction. His dissertation topic was the design of deployable whipple shields for nanosatellites.

Kai Kruger Bastos focused on the theoretical and computational studies of fluid dynamics phenomena including buffet, flutter and limit cycle oscillations under the advisement of Dr. Earl Dowell.
